This study aims to determine the role of openness in family communication in building emotional intelligence in children aged 6–12 years in Tanralili District, Maros Regency. The study focuses on how open communication between parents and children contributes to children’s emotional development, as well as identifying supporting and inhibiting factors in the communication process. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving parents and children aged 6–12 years. The results showed that openness in family communication plays a significant role in shaping children’s emotional intelligence. Open communication helps children express feelings more freely, understand emotions, control emotional responses, and develop empathy toward others. Supporting factors include emotional closeness between parents and children and the availability of family togetherness time. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include parents’ work busyness and excessive use of technology, which reduces direct interaction in the family. The study concludes that the family, as the child’s first social environment, has a central role in building emotional intelligence through warm, open, and empathetic communication. Therefore, parents are encouraged to maintain communication intensity and create quality interaction time with children.
